China has begun constructing a massive hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet, which could become the world’s largest hydroelectric power source. The project, costing about 1.2 trillion yuan ($167.1 billion), includes five power stations and aims to support China’s carbon neutrality goals. Electricity will be transmitted across regions, including Tibet. India has expressed concerns about the dam’s downstream impact on the Brahmaputra and Jamuna Rivers. China insists the project won’t harm downstream nations and will maintain communication. The dam, near the India-China border, may generate three times the power of the Three Gorges Dam once completed.
