India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the nation’s deep commitment to its responsibilities under the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). He stressed that India is not only a key player in this regional grouping but also carries the unique advantage of having the longest coastline in the Bay of Bengal—a fact that significantly bolsters its maritime capabilities and regional influence.

Speaking on the initiative, Jaishankar noted that India’s strategic positioning is coupled with an obligation to contribute constructively to regional integration and stability. He highlighted that the nation’s expansive coastline is instrumental in enhancing connectivity, trade, and security within the Bay of Bengal region. This geographical asset, he argued, provides India with both a platform and a responsibility to lead in collaborative endeavors that drive mutual growth and development among BIMSTEC member states.

The Minister also emphasized that India’s vision for cooperation is comprehensive and inclusive. He dismissed the notion of selective or piecemeal engagement, critiquing such approaches as “cherry-picking” the benefits of collaboration. According to Jaishankar, true regional cooperation requires an integrated outlook where all sectors and nations work together harmoniously. He reiterated that only a holistic and all-encompassing approach can ensure equitable progress and sustainable development for the entire region.

In his remarks, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s resolve to steer BIMSTEC initiatives in a manner that benefits all member countries, reinforcing the principle that regional partnerships must be built on unity, inclusivity, and shared responsibility.
