UPI Faces Second Outage in a Week, Users Report Payment Failures
India’s widely used digital payments system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), suffered a temporary outage for the second time within a week, affecting thousands of users nationwide.
The disruption occurred on Wednesday evening, April 2, with reports peaking around 7:23 PM, according to Downdetector, a platform that tracks real-time service outages based on user complaints. At its peak, 520 users reported issues with UPI transactions, highlighting widespread inconvenience.
According to user reports, 44% of complaints were related to payment failures, while 55% of users faced issues with fund transfers. Many users struggled with declined transactions, delayed confirmations, and repeated failed attempts.
While the cause of the outage remains unclear, financial service providers and banks acknowledged the disruption, stating that technical teams worked swiftly to restore normalcy. Following the temporary setback, UPI services have gradually recovered, and transactions are now processing smoothly.
This marks the second instance of UPI downtime within a week, raising concerns about the reliability of India’s premier digital payment system. As UPI continues to handle billions of transactions monthly, such interruptions highlight the need for enhanced infrastructure and robust backup mechanisms to prevent future disruptions.
