On August 31, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Mangal Pandey at Ghungoor, Silchar, honoring his sacrifice and Barak Valley’s role in the 1857 revolt. He released books on Mangal Pandey, Deendayal Upadhyay, Srimanta Sankardeva, and Sri Sri Madhavdev. Sarma highlighted the Sepoy Mutiny as India’s first resistance against British colonialism, praising the bravery of rebel sepoys and their legacy in igniting the freedom movement. Recalling Pandey’s heroism, he noted his rebellion at Barrackpore on March 29, 1857, and his martyrdom on April 8, inspiring India’s long struggle for independence.
