Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans for an eviction drive in Sribhumi’s Patharkandi and other parts of Barak Valley. Excavators and backhoe loaders will be deployed for the operation. Sarma linked the move to concerns over illegal migration, stating Bangladeshi nationals are still being caught across the state, though he assured that Bengali Hindus are “100 percent safe.” Earlier, PWD Minister Krishnendu Paul also hinted at a major eviction drive, alleging that encroachments in reserve forest areas like Pataria and Dohaliya were attempts to alter the region’s demography. The government vowed strict action with no leniency.
