Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he termed “one of the most consequential reforms” in India’s GST structure. The GST Council approved a major overhaul, reducing slabs to 5% and 18% from September 22. In a post on X, Sarma said the reform would boost the economy by supporting SMEs, creating jobs, driving consumption, and leaving more money with people. Reflecting on his tenure as Assam’s Finance Minister, he called the move a defining moment, praising the Modi Government’s balanced approach to governance and ability to reform GST as needed.
