Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a visit to flood-hit Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, assuring that the government “stands shoulder to shoulder with the affected people.” During his day-long visit, he will assess the aftermath of heavy rains and unprecedented river flooding. Modi is set to visit Himachal first, followed by an aerial survey and ground review in Punjab’s severely affected Gurdaspur, where 329 villages and 1.45 lakh people are impacted, and 40,000 hectares of farmland submerged. He will also meet NDRF, SDRF, and Aapda Mitra teams. Punjab floods have affected 23 districts, causing 51 deaths and crop damage on 1.84 lakh hectares.
