On September 8, Assam launched year-long centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, with Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma paying tributes at his memorial in Guwahati. The inaugural event featured 100 prominent personalities hoisting a flag and a musical programme celebrating his legacy. Hazarika’s son, Tez, attended from the US, and PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to join on September 13. Hazarika, born September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Tinsukia, was celebrated for his soulful music promoting humanity, justice, and empathy. Statewide events include cultural programmes, student performances, and commemorative honours like Bharat Ratna and Dibrugarh Airport renaming.
