Trump Stands by Tariffs as Markets Tumble, Calling Them 'Medicine' for the Economy

U.S. President Donald Trump has downplayed the global market turmoil triggered by his broad tariff policies, comparing the economic disruption to a necessary remedy.

“Sometimes, you have to take medicine to fix something,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. “I don’t want anything to go down, but it’s sometimes necessary.”

His remarks came as rattled investors continued a major sell-off, sending global stock markets into a downward spiral.

Trump Doubles Down on Tariffs, Demands Trade Balance Amid Global Market Slide

U.S. President Donald Trump has defended his hardline tariff policies despite escalating market volatility, blaming past administrations for what he called years of economic mismanagement.

“We’ve been treated so badly by other countries because we had stupid leadership that allowed this to happen,” Trump said. “They took our businesses, they took our money, they took our jobs.”

Reaffirming his commitment to "reciprocal tariffs," Trump made it clear he would not ease pressure unless other nations moved to balance their trade with the United States. He claimed to have spoken with several foreign leaders over the weekend who were “dying to make a deal.”

“I told them, ‘We’re not going to have deficits with your country,’” he said. “To me, a deficit is a loss. We’re going to have surpluses—or at the very least, break even.”
