Shyamkanu Mahanta, implicated in the investigation of Assam singer Zubeen Garg’s death, approached the Supreme Court from Singapore on September 30, 2025, through advocate Raj Kamal as a preemptive legal move before returning to India. He was arrested by Assam Police on October 1 in New Delhi. Following his arrest, Mahanta will now seek regular bail through lower courts amid ongoing investigations, including potential central agency involvement. Assam Police have also charged Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and Mahanta under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which prescribes life imprisonment or death for murder, with the probe continuing under SIT supervision.
