Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, former Union Minister and four-time Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain resigned from the BJP on Thursday, along with 17 other members. In a letter to Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, Gohain relinquished his primary membership and all organisational responsibilities. Sources indicated that most of the other resigning members were from Upper and Central Assam, reflecting internal discontent within the state unit. Gohain cited the party’s failure to fulfill promises to Assam’s people and its perceived betrayal of indigenous communities by allowing outsiders to settle as reasons for his exit.
