ChatGPT to Soon Enable Direct UPI Payments

Indian shoppers will soon be able to make purchases and pay directly through AI chatbots like ChatGPT, thanks to a partnership between NPCI, OpenAI, and Razorpay. Razorpay is privately testing its Agentic Payments beta, enabling transactions without leaving the AI platform. The system will use UPI’s new ‘reserve pay’ and UPI Circle features for secure, user-controlled payments. Airtel Payments Bank and Axis Bank are pilot partners, with BigBasket and Vodafone Idea among the first platforms to integrate. Trials with other AI chatbots like Gemini and Claude are complete, though the service will go live in a few weeks, ensuring user authorization via two-factor authentication.
