United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said a prolonged shutdown of the federal government could hurt airline bookings. While essential federal workers such as TSA agents and air traffic controllers remain on the job without pay, the shutdown beginning Oct. 1 because Congress couldn't pass a spending bill hasn't yet hurt United's business. Kirby added that as the shutdown continues and citizens' faith in government erodes, bookings could take a hit. FAA facility staffing shortages have already resulted in flight disruptions at airports such as Burbank and Nashville. Delta CEO Ed Bastian and air traffic controller unions also raised similar issues.
