On Saturday, April 12, 2025, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services experienced widespread disruption, affecting users across India. Many reported failed transactions, with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI network, confirming the issue. NPCI said the disruption was due to “intermittent technical issues.” In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), NPCI assured users that it was working to fix the problem and apologized for the inconvenience.
This is the second UPI outage in April. The first one occurred on April 2, when users experienced delays in transactions due to backend issues linked to the financial year-end procedures.
Outage tracking site Downdetector reported a surge in complaints starting at 11:50 a.m., peaking around 1:00 p.m. with over 2,300 reports. Most of the complaints (81%) were about payment failures, 17% were related to fund transfers, and 2% had trouble with purchases.
Users shared their frustrations on social media, with many unable to make even small payments. Some received error messages such as, “Recipient’s bank network is down. You’re not able to make payment to your recipient’s bank. Please try paying to a different bank account.”
NPCI assured customers that its technical teams were working to resolve the issue and restore services as quickly as possible.
