Wikipedia has unveiled a new AI strategy aimed at supporting, not replacing, its volunteer editors by integrating generative AI to ease their workload. The Wikimedia Foundation emphasized a human-centered approach that values transparency, open-source tools, and multilingual inclusivity. AI will assist with tasks like translation, background research, and volunteer onboarding, while content creation will remain strictly human-led. The platform has previously used AI to detect vandalism and enhance readability. Additionally, Wikimedia is developing a structured dataset for AI training to reduce server strain caused by bots. This approach contrasts with other companies replacing human roles with AI.
