Assam Panchayat Polls See 70% Turnout; Re-Poll Ordered in 43 Booths After Sporadic Violence

The first phase of the Assam Panchayat Election 2025 concluded on May 2 with a voter turnout of 70.19%, as per the Assam State Election Commission. Voting was held from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM across 14 districts, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Majuli. Despite some isolated incidents, officials called the polling largely peaceful. However, re-polling has been ordered in 43 booths due to disruptions—31 in Hailakandi, 8 in Sribhumi, 2 in Lakhimpur, and 1 each in Golaghat and Majuli. The re-poll dates will be announced soon. Authorities commended voters and security forces for a smooth electoral process.
