Rwanda Confirms Ongoing Talks with US on Accepting Deported Migrants

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe confirmed ongoing early-stage talks with the US to receive deported migrants, including those with criminal records, in exchange for financial and reintegration support. This follows a failed UK-Rwanda migrant deal ruled unlawful by Britain’s Supreme Court. The US, under President Trump, seeks distant nations to prevent returnees and recently deported an Iraqi to Rwanda as a potential model. Trump’s administration faces legal issues over deportation practices, including proposals to deport US citizens. UNHCR warned of risks to deportees sent to Rwanda, but Kigali denies allegations and seeks £50 million compensation from the UK over the scrapped deal.
