OpenAI has announced that data from Indian users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API Platform will now be stored locally in India to meet data sovereignty requirements. This includes user prompts, files, and content across various modalities. Eligible API users can opt for local storage by selecting India in their dashboard. India, OpenAI’s second-largest market, saw its user base triple in 2024. The move follows CEO Sam Altman's visit and meetings with Indian officials. OpenAI also extended similar data residency programs to Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, enhancing its data privacy and compliance commitments across Asia.
