Kaushik Rai, the Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Barak Valley Development, chaired a high-level review meeting in Silchar on Thursday to evaluate the preparedness for managing potential flood situations.
In his address to the stakeholders, Rai emphasized the importance of a coordinated, multi-departmental approach to reduce the impact of floods. "The government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is dedicated to safeguarding the people of Cachar from the challenges of floods. We must ensure that all preventive measures are implemented well in advance, with no room for errors," he stated.
The minister instructed officials to take proactive steps in strengthening embankments, improving drainage systems, and ensuring the proper functioning of sluice gates to prevent waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable areas. In addition to flood preparedness, the meeting also addressed the maintenance and functionality of sluice gates under the Water Resources Department, desilting operations in Silchar town, and the removal of stagnant water along Sonai Road—issues that have long affected daily life and mobility in the region.
