Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday, following a Cabinet meeting, that commercial establishments in the municipal corporation areas of Dibrugarh, Guwahati, and Silchar will now have the option to operate 24/7, at the discretion of their owners. This move is aimed at boosting the local economy by providing businesses with greater flexibility and allowing them to cater to customers at any time of day or night. The decision is expected to create more job opportunities, increase economic activity, and improve the convenience of shopping for residents and visitors alike.

Speaking at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that shops in the municipal corporation areas will operate around the clock, but with specific regulations to ensure employee welfare. "There will be no mandatory weekly closure. However, no employee will be required to work more than 48 hours per week in a single shift, in accordance with existing labor laws," Sarma explained. He also added that in other parts of the state, business establishments will be allowed to remain open until 2 a.m.
