After India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has, for the first time, expressed willingness to discuss India's concerns about the treaty. Pakistan’s Water Resources Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza responded to India’s notification, offering to discuss specific objections while questioning the treaty’s suspension due to no exit clause. This marks a shift after India’s immediate suspension post-attack and military standstill. India demands modifications, especially in dispute resolution, and insists on bilateral talks without third-party involvement. The IWT allocates eastern rivers to India and western rivers to Pakistan.
