Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve recently documented 70 orchid species across 36 genera in a rapid survey, making it one of Northeast India’s richest orchid collections. Among these, 46 species are epiphytes and 24 terrestrial. Notable orchids include Aerides odorata, Biermannia bimaculata, and Bulbophyllum ornatissimum, with some species endemic and others rare in Assam. The survey was preceded by a conservation outreach program for local students, featuring guided walks and expert talks on orchids and butterflies. Assam’s Forest Minister hailed the discovery as a testament to Kaziranga’s rich biodiversity and conservation success.
