Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu clarified that Ration Cards will be accepted as valid income proof for free admission in government and provincialised schools and colleges. Alternatively, income certificates from competent authorities are also valid. This comes as a relief to students under the state’s free admission scheme. Pegu noted that earlier, students with parental income up to ₹2 lakh qualified, but the limit has now been increased to ₹4 lakh. As of now, 71% of 1.66 lakh college applicants have availed the scheme. Admission fees are regulated by a State Fee Committee, though set by colleges and universities.
