South Sudan Faces Crisis as Sudan’s Conflict Endangers Key Oil Industry

South Sudan, which depends on oil for over 90% of its government revenue, exports its oil through Sudan. However, Sudan's army-backed government has warned it may shut down the export facilities following repeated drone attacks by the paramilitary RSF on Port Sudan, damaging key infrastructure. This move threatens to collapse South Sudan’s economy and drag it into Sudan's civil war. Experts suggest Sudan’s warning is a plea for help, though South Sudan has limited influence over RSF. Since its 2011 independence, South Sudan has paid Sudan transit fees as part of a 2005 peace deal that ended a long civil war.
