The Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea seeking a total ban on illegal betting apps and stricter regulations on online gaming and fantasy sports. The petitioner, a prominent social activist and global peace ambassador, filed the Public Interest Litigation to protect millions and uphold democracy by banning such apps. The plea cited an FIR against celebrities promoting betting apps and reported suicides linked to online betting debts in Telangana. It argued that betting is a game of chance, not skill, and lacks uniform central regulation. The petitioner emphasized safeguarding Indian youth from the exploitative online betting industry disguised as fantasy sports.
