According to the 2023–24 Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), five northeastern states rank among India’s top 10 most literate regions. Mizoram leads with a 98.2% literacy rate and was recently declared India’s first fully literate state under the ULLAS initiative. Nagaland (95.7%) is third, Meghalaya (94.2%) fifth, Tripura (93.7%) shares sixth with Chandigarh, and Manipur (92%) is tenth. This highlights the Northeast’s strong educational progress. However, literacy gaps remain in states like Andhra Pradesh (72.6%), Bihar (74.3%), and Madhya Pradesh (75.2%), which report significantly lower literacy rates, indicating uneven educational development across the country.
