Guwahati-born Tonmoy Sharma, former CEO of Sovereign Health Group, was arrested at Los Angeles Airport for a $149 million healthcare fraud case. Indicted on eight charges including wire fraud and conspiracy, Sharma allegedly enrolled patients without consent, submitted fake claims, and paid $21 million in illegal kickbacks. The fraud involved false insurance claims through the now-defunct addiction treatment network in Southern California. His co-defendant Paul Jin Sen Khor pleaded not guilty. Sharma, a Dibrugarh Medical College alumnus and psychiatric expert, faces trial on July 29. The FBI had been investigating since 2017, shocking both Assamese diaspora and the global medical community.
