India-Bhutan Experts Collaborate on Conservation Strategies for Endangered Golden Langur

A workshop on conservation strategies and action plans for the endangered Golden Langur (Trachypithecus geei) was held in Bongaigaon on March 25. Organized by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in collaboration with the Primate Research Centre-NE, Bodoland Territorial Council, and the Assam Forest Department, the event brought together leading primatologists and conservation experts from India and Bhutan.

The international workshop and consultation, supported by the Royal Enfield Social Mission, focused on strengthening conservation efforts through scientific research, habitat protection, and community involvement. Experts discussed key challenges, including habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict, and shared insights to ensure the long-term survival of the species within its distribution range.

The Golden Langur, a strikingly beautiful primate endemic to western Assam and southern Bhutan, is found exclusively between the Sankosh and Beki rivers in the eastern Himalayan landscape. The species faces mounting threats, including habitat fragmentation, road accidents, electrocution, and human-wildlife conflict.

With an estimated 7,000 individuals remaining in the wild, the recent workshop aimed to bring together conservationists, community leaders, researchers, and policymakers to develop actionable strategies for safeguarding the species and ensuring its long-term survival.
