Russia is intensifying its economic and military presence in Africa, aiming to fill the geopolitical vacuum left by Western powers amid a wave of military coups. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized a focus on economic, investment, defence, and security cooperation with African nations. Russia's role has expanded in countries like Mali, the Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea, displacing influence from France and the U.S. Despite the exit of Wagner mercenaries from Mali, the Kremlin-backed Africa Corps will remain. Formed after Wagner's failed mutiny, the Africa Corps is mainly composed of ex-Wagner members and focuses more on training and logistical support.
