OpenAI has delayed the release of its open-weight AI model, initially expected in early summer, to later this season. CEO Sam Altman announced the delay on June 11, citing unexpected and impressive progress by the research team that warrants extra time. This upcoming model, OpenAI’s first open-weight model since GPT-2 in 2019, is expected to rival the o-series in reasoning and outperform models like DeepSeek’s R1. Open-weight models publicly share their trained parameters, allowing broader use, though licensing restrictions may apply. Integration with OpenAI’s cloud system is being explored but not confirmed for the final version.
