The Mizoram government has announced the establishment of two areca nut processing plants in separate districts to address challenges faced by local growers, Chief Minister Lalduhoma stated.

Speaking at a statewide seminar and training session on scientific cultivation methods and pest management of areca nuts in Aizawl, Lalduhoma revealed that the North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned ₹7.43 crore for the project. The two processing units will be set up at Chemphai in Kolasib district, near the Assam border, and Zamuang in Mamit district, in western Mizoram.

The chief minister expressed confidence that once operational, these processing units would enhance marketing opportunities, introduce value-added products, and provide much-needed support to local farmers struggling to sell their produce at fair prices.

Combatting Illegal Areca Nut Imports from Myanmar

Lalduhoma also highlighted the negative impact of illegal areca nut imports from Myanmar, which have severely affected local growers. Many farmers have found it difficult to compete with smuggled nuts flooding the market, driving down prices. He assured that his government is taking stringent measures to curb the smuggling of Burmese areca nuts, noting that while the illegal trade has significantly reduced, it remains a challenge to eliminate completely.

Innovative Processing & Value Addition

Through these new processing units, farmers will have the capability to:
Process dried and skob areca nuts (water-drenched or soaked nuts)
Utilize areca nut peels to produce compost
Manufacture biodegradable disposable plates from areca sheaths and leaves

These initiatives are expected to increase farmers’ incomes and promote sustainable agriculture practices in the state.

Areca Nut Cultivation Policy & Farmer Support

Despite the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the DoNER Ministry not actively encouraging the expansion of areca nut cultivation, the Mizoram government has decided to allow interested farmers to continue growing the crop.

Lalduhoma further mentioned that 318 individuals have applied for assistance under the state’s flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ (handholding) scheme, while another 93 people have sought support under the CM’s special package for areca nut cultivation.

These efforts signal Mizoram’s commitment to supporting its farmers, ensuring sustainability, and fostering economic growth in the agricultural sector.
