A Kenyan court sentenced two men, Hussein Mohammed Abdile and Mohamed Abdi Ali, to 30 years in prison for aiding al-Shabab in the 2019 DusitD2 hotel attack in Nairobi that killed 21 people. The court found they helped attackers escape a refugee camp using fake IDs and provided financial support. Al-Shabab, linked to al-Qaeda, claimed the attack in response to U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. This was Nairobi’s worst attack since the 2013 Westgate mall siege. Al-Shabab frequently targets high-end venues in Kenya, aiming to pressure Kenyan troops to withdraw from Somalia, where they fight the group.
