The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have signed a provisional peace agreement to end conflict in eastern DRC, following U.S.-led talks in Washington. The agreement includes disarmament, integration of armed groups, and refugee return. Conflict in the mineral-rich region escalated after Rwanda-backed M23 rebels captured Goma and Bukavu, though Rwanda denies involvement. Thousands have died and many displaced. Amnesty International and the UN have reported human rights abuses by all sides. The U.S. aims to restore peace and enable investment in DRC’s vast mineral reserves. The final agreement is expected to be signed on June 27.
