Assam has emerged as the frontrunner in National Highway (NH) development among the Northeastern states, boasting the highest number of projects and the longest road network currently under construction.
With a massive investment of ₹39,239 crore, this initiative marks the largest infrastructure push in the region, covering both completed projects in 2024-25 and approved projects awaiting commencement.
Assam has received the largest share of national highway development funds, with an allocation of ₹5,329 crore for construction and maintenance. Other Northeastern states have also received significant funding:
Arunachal Pradesh – ₹3,488 crore
Manipur – ₹1,508 crore
Nagaland – ₹1,227 crore
Tripura – ₹514 crore
While Arunachal Pradesh currently has fewer ongoing projects, it has the highest approved investment plan for the future, totaling ₹43,322 crore. The total cost of ongoing NH projects in the state stands at ₹87,363 crore.
The completion of these projects depends on various critical factors, including:
✅ Availability of encumbrance-free land
✅ Forest & environmental clearances
✅ Utility shifting requirements
✅ Weather conditions
✅ Financial stability of contractors
Despite these challenges, all ongoing NH projects in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura are scheduled for completion by 2028, significantly improving connectivity and economic prospects in the Northeast.
