Assam and Meghalaya have begun installing boundary pillars in Hahim, Kamrup district, to resolve a 50-year-old border dispute stemming from Meghalaya’s separation in 1972. This follows a 2022 MoU that settled six of twelve contentious areas. Pillars are being placed along rivers near villages like Umshek and Rangsapara. The move comes after a June 2 meeting between CMs Sarma and Sangma, aiming to complete pillar installation in the resolved areas by August 15, 2025. Locals welcomed the clarity after decades of confusion. However, six areas remain disputed due to ethnic tensions and unresolved historical claims since the 1971 Assam Reorganisation Act.
