Manipur Journalists Stage Protest Against Govt Inaction on Gwaltabi Incident

On Monday, journalists under the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) staged a sit-in protest in Imphal, condemning the state government’s silence on the May 20, 2025 Gwaltabi incident. Journalists heading to Ukhrul to cover the Shirui Lily Festival were stopped by security personnel, which media groups called a violation of press freedom. Protesters carried placards defending media rights. Although a two-member inquiry was ordered by the Governor, its findings remain undisclosed. AMWJU criticized the government’s inaction and lack of clarification, calling it a serious threat to press freedom in Manipur.
