Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that central financial aid to Meghalaya increased by 231% between 2014 and 2024 compared to the previous decade. The state received ₹89,335 crore in tax devolution and Grants-in-Aid, up from ₹26,973 crore during 2004–2014. Tax devolution rose by 572% to ₹48,883 crore, while Grants-in-Aid nearly doubled to ₹40,452 crore. Sitharaman said this unprecedented support boosted infrastructure, rural development, education, and healthcare. Meghalaya also received ₹5,471 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. Her remarks came during a four-day visit to the state, highlighting the Centre’s strong development focus.
