China Calls Tibet-Related Issues a ‘Stumbling Block’ in Ties with India

China has called the Dalai Lama’s succession a “thorn” in India-China relations, ahead of Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to China for a regional meeting. The Chinese embassy in New Delhi criticized Indian officials’ comments on the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, saying it is China’s internal matter. The Dalai Lama, living in exile in India since 1959, recently stated China has no role in his succession, angering Beijing. His presence in India provides New Delhi strategic leverage. India reiterated it does not comment on religious beliefs. Jaishankar’s visit marks a rare high-level meeting since the deadly 2020 border clashes.
