In a significant push to promote football and develop young sporting talent, the Nagaland government has unveiled three key initiatives aimed at transforming the state’s football ecosystem. The newly announced programs include the Nagaland Football Academy, the Chief Minister's Sports Scholarships, and the Nagaland International Gold Cup.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the valedictory function of the inaugural Nagaland Super League (NSL) at Chumoukedima Football Stadium on Tuesday. The event was organized under the Naga Football Association and the Department of Youth Resources and Sports.
Nagaland Football Academy
The academy will be a state-supported professional football training center based at Chumoukedima Football Stadium.
It will be developed in collaboration with an internationally reputed institution, ensuring world-class training and infrastructure.
The initiative aims to identify, nurture, and develop young footballers, elevating the sporting landscape of Nagaland.
Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarships
This initiative will select and fund young football talents for training at top football academies.
The funding will be provided in partnership with the Nagaland Olympic Association, affiliated sports associations, and national federations.
Selected athletes will be sent to high-performance training centers, focusing on medal prospects at national and international levels.
Nagaland International Gold Cup
The state will host the Nagaland International Gold Cup, featuring:
Four local teams
Four national teams
Four international teams
The tournament aims to provide national and international exposure to local players while preparing them for the I-League.
Additionally, ₹2 crore per annum will be awarded to teams qualifying for the National I-League, encouraging local clubs to compete at the highest levels.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Rio emphasized the need for investments in grassroots development, infrastructure, and capacity-building to make Nagaland a prominent player in Indian football.
"Sport is more than competition—it represents character, unity, resilience, and hope. The NSL is a promise to every young boy and girl in Nagaland that if they dare to dream, work hard, and stay committed, the world will take notice," Rio said.
Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton also highlighted the government's commitment to promoting sports across all disciplines, providing young athletes with platforms to showcase their talent.
The initiatives mark a historic step in Nagaland’s football journey, aiming to empower young players, attract global attention, and position the state as a hub for football excellence in India.
