The State Election Commission, Assam, has announced that panchayat elections will be conducted in two phases across 27 districts on May 2 and May 7, 2025.
State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar stated that the first phase, scheduled for May 2, will cover 14 districts in Upper Assam and Barak Valley, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. The second phase, on May 7, will take place in 13 districts of Lower Assam, including Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.
A total of 18,036,682 electors—9,071,264 male voters, 8,965,010 female voters, and 408 others—are eligible to vote. The voter count has increased by 13.27% compared to the 2018 panchayat elections, which had 15,641,456 voters. Kumar noted that the gender gap in voter numbers, which was about six lakh in the last elections, has now reduced to less than one percent.
Polling will take place across 25,007 polling stations from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM on both days, with 1,20,000 polling personnel deployed. The counting of votes for both phases will commence on May 11, 2025, at 8:00 AM and continue until completion.
Nomination papers can be filed from April 11, 2025, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 12, starting at 10:30 AM, and the list of validly nominated candidates will be published the same day. Candidates may withdraw their nominations until 3:00 PM on April 17, after which the final list of contesting candidates will be released.
If repolling is required, it will be held on May 4 for the first phase and May 9 for the second phase. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is now in effect in all areas covered by the elections.
