Google introduced AI Mode in India a few months ago, enhancing its Search functionality with AI-powered capabilities to handle more complex, nuanced, and detailed queries. Previously available only in English, AI Mode leverages a custom version of Gemini 2.5 to allow users to ask longer and more intricate questions that previously required multiple searches. Its design enables the AI to provide personalized responses to queries across a wide spectrum of topics, from finding local recommendations to understanding complex how-tos or planning a trip. Users can interact with the system via text, voice, or by uploading images, expanding the way information can be sought and received.

In a recent blog post, Google announced the expansion of AI Mode to Hindi and four additional languages: Brazilian Portuguese, Indonesian, Korean, and Japanese. This marks a significant step in making advanced AI-powered search accessible to non-English speakers. Users can now ask complex and explanatory questions in their preferred language. For example, uploading a photo of a balcony and asking which night-blooming fragrant plants to plant for optimal enjoyment while watching the city view and local train would prompt AI Mode to analyze the image, understand the query context, and provide a personalized solution. According to Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, this expansion allows users to explore the web more deeply in their native languages, making search experiences richer and more relevant.

Budaraju highlighted in a statement to IndianExpress.com that Indian users are increasingly appreciating the speed, quality, and freshness of the AI Mode responses. Google AI Mode is currently accessible through a dedicated tab on the search results page, as well as via a button in the search bar, with considerations underway to make it the default search mode for users. This ensures that the feature is highly visible and easy to access for users looking to enhance their search experience.

Additionally, Google recently introduced agentic capabilities to AI Mode, enabling it to perform certain tasks beyond traditional search. These features allow AI Mode to assist in finding restaurant reservations and are planned to be extended to making local service appointments and even ticket bookings in the near future. Currently, these advanced agentic functionalities are limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US, a premium service priced at $249.99 per month. However, the introduction of such features points to a growing emphasis on AI Mode not just as a search tool, but as a practical assistant capable of facilitating real-world tasks and decisions.

Overall, the expansion of AI Mode to multiple languages in India represents a significant step toward inclusive and personalized AI-powered search. It empowers users to ask more complex, context-sensitive, and language-specific questions, while leveraging Gemini 2.5’s advanced AI capabilities. By integrating visual inputs, voice interactions, and agentic functions, Google aims to transform search into a richer, more interactive, and actionable experience. This development aligns with Google’s broader vision of making AI accessible, intuitive, and useful for users worldwide, while emphasizing the importance of responsiveness, accuracy, and relevance in search outputs. With continuous improvements and planned expansion of agentic features, AI Mode is positioned as a major evolution in search technology, bridging the gap between traditional search engines and intelligent personal assistants.

This expansion highlights Google’s commitment to making AI-driven tools more inclusive, helping users navigate complex queries effortlessly while supporting diverse linguistic and cultural contexts. It marks a critical advancement in the evolution of search technology, combining AI comprehension with practical usability.
