On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary, a new and larger statue of the Father of the Nation was unveiled at Gandhi Chowk in the heart of Pasighat’s main market, East Siang district. The unveiling ceremony coincided with the conclusion of the month-long “Swachhta Hi Seva” campaign, which began on September 17, emphasizing cleanliness, civic responsibility, and public participation in maintaining hygiene and sanitation. This campaign, part of the nationwide initiative, was aimed at fostering awareness and active involvement of citizens in keeping their surroundings clean, honoring Gandhi’s philosophy of cleanliness as an essential part of nation-building.
The new statue, replacing an older and smaller one, was inaugurated by MLA Tapi Darang of 38th Pasighat East constituency. The event saw the presence of senior government officials, including Deputy Commissioner Sonalika Jiwani, Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba, ADC (HQ) Pebika Lego, along with various departmental heads, public leaders, and citizens. The ceremony began with prayers and floral tributes offered by religious leaders, dignitaries, and members of the public, paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy. Additionally, certificates of appreciation were awarded to social workers, organizations, individuals, and government departments that actively participated in the Swachhta Abhiyan for Pasighat, recognizing their contribution to the campaign and encouraging continued efforts in promoting cleanliness.
In his address, MLA Tapi Darang lauded the efforts of all individuals involved in the campaign, highlighting the importance of cleanliness originating from one’s inner self. He emphasized that the idea of personal responsibility for cleanliness is central to achieving a clean and healthy community. Deputy Commissioner Sonalika Jiwani also acknowledged the contributions of Safai Mitras (sanitation workers) and all campaign participants, urging citizens to take social responsibility seriously. She stressed the need to avoid littering in public spaces and to discourage such behavior among others, reinforcing the broader goals of the Swachhta Abhiyan.
The event concluded with a collective pledge from all attendees to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and to uphold the spirit of the Swachhta Abhiyan. The ceremony was further solemnized by the presence of Bosiram Siram, President of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee, Allen Perme, President of the District Congress Committee, East Siang, and other Congress leaders, who paid floral tributes at Gandhi Chowk, signifying respect and recognition for Gandhi’s ideals.
The earlier, smaller statue of Mahatma Gandhi had been replaced as part of the township redevelopment under the Smart City Mission. This redevelopment aimed to modernize the town center while simultaneously reinforcing Gandhi’s principles of cleanliness, civic responsibility, and public awareness. The new statue symbolizes a renewed tribute to these ideals, reflecting both respect for Gandhi’s legacy and the ongoing commitment of the local community and government to promoting sanitation, hygiene, and civic engagement.
Overall, the unveiling of the new Mahatma Gandhi statue at Pasighat not only commemorates Gandhi Jayanti but also reinforces the importance of cleanliness and social responsibility, while highlighting active citizen participation in government-led initiatives like the Swachhta Hi Seva campaign. The event reflects the harmonious blend of cultural homage, civic awareness, and community involvement, ensuring that Gandhi’s vision continues to inspire present and future generations in East Siang and beyond.
