Garima Saikia Garg, wife of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, shared an emotional message on social media, stating, “20 days… Am I really alive?” This post reflects her profound grief and anguish following her husband’s untimely and tragic death. Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, during a scuba diving incident in Singapore while he was attending the North East India Festival to perform. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Zubeen succumbed to his injuries. His sudden death shocked fans, colleagues, and the general public, generating widespread sorrow and concern.

The circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s death have sparked significant controversy, prompting both public outrage and a formal investigation. Garima has actively voiced her concerns about the incident, alleging that Zubeen was coerced into participating in the dive despite known risks and expressing serious worries about the lack of adequate safety measures. In a recent statement, she revealed her frustration, saying, “I kept calling for details but did not get any,” emphasizing the opacity surrounding the incident.

Responding to public concern, the Assam government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly probe the events leading to Zubeen’s death. As part of the ongoing investigation, four individuals were arrested. These include Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s manager; Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival organiser of the North East India Festival; Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Zubeen’s bandmate and drummer; and Amritprabha Mahanta, a singer and co-performer at the festival. The arrests were based on allegations of negligence, misconduct, and the coercion of Zubeen to participate in the dive despite his medical history.

Bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami claimed that Zubeen, who had a history of seizures, was pressured into performing the dive following an all-night party. Goswami also alleged that warning signs, such as frothing from Zubeen’s mouth, were ignored, and medical assistance was delayed, contributing to the tragic outcome. The preliminary findings of the SIT have also raised questions about financial irregularities, revealing that approximately Rs 1 crore was transacted through the accounts of Zubeen’s personal security officers, suggesting potential misuse or mismanagement of funds.

In a related development, Rupkamal Kalita, an NRI based in Singapore and one of the eight individuals present on the yacht during the incident, has stepped forward to assist the authorities in the investigation. This cooperation aims to ensure a comprehensive and transparent probe into the incident.

Throughout these events, Garima Saikia Garg has appealed to the public and authorities to keep the matter apolitical, urging that the singer’s legacy not be overshadowed by political or personal agendas. She emphasized, “Do not want politics to cloud Zubeen's death,” calling for respect toward his memory and for unity among fans and the general public.

As the SIT continues its investigation, the people of Assam, alongside Zubeen’s fans worldwide, await clarity on the precise circumstances that led to the singer’s untimely passing. The investigation seeks to address safety lapses, accountability for negligence, and any financial irregularities, while providing answers to grieving family members and fans. Garima’s emotional posts and the arrests reflect both the complexity of the case and the community’s demand for justice, transparency, and closure regarding the beloved singer’s tragic death.
