On Thursday, India and Australia explored avenues for joint production of military hardware as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Australian counterpart, Richard Marles, in Canberra. The discussions were aimed at further strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership between the two nations. Singh, who is on a two-day official visit to Australia, described the meeting as “productive” and emphasized the wide-ranging scope of India-Australia defence cooperation, including areas such as defence industry collaboration, cyber defence, maritime security, and regional challenges. The talks underscored both nations’ commitment to enhancing strategic ties and their shared interests in regional and global security.

During the discussions, Singh and Marles reaffirmed the importance of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which was formalized in 2020, elevating the bilateral relationship from a standard strategic partnership. Singh highlighted India’s rapidly growing defence industry and its increasing global recognition as a reliable source of high-quality defence technology. Both sides explored the potential for deeper defence industry collaborations, particularly in joint production, technology sharing, and capacity building. These discussions reflect a growing emphasis on indigenous defence manufacturing and a move towards greater self-reliance in defence capabilities, while leveraging bilateral collaboration for technological advancement and strategic alignment.

Singh expressed gratitude to Australia for its steadfast support in countering cross-border terrorism and fostering shared regional stability. Both countries discussed strategies to deepen cooperation for a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific, emphasizing collective security, maritime safety, and diplomatic engagement in the region. The Indo-Pacific has emerged as a significant theatre for regional stability, and both nations are committed to upholding security, freedom of navigation, and collaborative measures to address emerging threats.

In addition to his meetings with the Defence Minister, Singh also met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Indian Defence Minister noted that Prime Minister Albanese fondly recalled his deep association with India and expressed optimism about the future trajectory of bilateral relations. Singh conveyed confidence that the India-Australia relationship will continue to grow deeper, stronger, and more multifaceted across defence, trade, education, and diplomatic channels.

The India-Australia defence partnership has seen significant growth over the past few years, with enhanced cooperation in capacity-building programs, military training, joint exercises, and ship visits. These initiatives have strengthened interoperability, shared understanding, and operational readiness between the armed forces of both nations. The collaboration also extends to strategic dialogues, technology transfers, and joint ventures in defence manufacturing, reflecting a broader commitment to regional stability and security.

By establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, India and Australia have formalized a framework to expand cooperation across defence, trade, technology, and regional security. The CSP enables structured engagement on issues such as defence industry collaboration, counter-terrorism, maritime security, cyber defence, and regional stability. The partnership emphasizes mutual trust, shared strategic objectives, and a vision for a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific. The talks between Rajnath Singh and Richard Marles represent a continuation of this evolving partnership, with concrete steps toward joint production of military hardware and deeper strategic collaboration.

Overall, the meetings and discussions underscore the shared vision of India and Australia to enhance defence and security cooperation, expand bilateral trade and technology collaboration, and contribute to a stable and secure Indo-Pacific region. The India-Australia defence relationship is thus poised for further growth, strengthening regional partnerships and advancing shared strategic objectives.
