The Public Works (Roads) Department (PWRD) of the Government of Assam has announced a temporary closure of the Chandmari Flyover in Guwahati to carry out essential maintenance work, including bearing replacement, over three nights in October 2025. This preventive measure is deemed necessary to ensure the structural integrity, safety, and longevity of the flyover, which serves as a vital arterial connector in the city’s traffic network. The scheduled closure has been officially communicated to minimize inconvenience to commuters while maintaining public safety.
According to the notification issued by the Executive Engineer of the New Guwahati Territorial Road Division, the closure will affect the stretch of the flyover between the Guwahati Commerce College traffic point and the Chandmari traffic point. The flyover will remain closed from 10 PM to 6 AM on October 13, 15, and 17, 2025. During these hours, no vehicular movement will be allowed on the specified section of the flyover to facilitate uninterrupted maintenance work, which includes the replacement of bearings—critical components responsible for supporting the structure and enabling smooth vehicular load distribution.
To mitigate the disruption caused by the closure, the PWRD has arranged alternative traffic routes. Commuters are advised to use Rajgarh–Pub Sarania Road, MT Road–Bamunimaidan Railway Colony Road, Mathgaria–Noonmati Road, and Krishnagar–Milanpur Road during the closure periods. The department has issued a public appeal requesting commuters to plan their journeys in advance, follow the temporary traffic diversions, and cooperate with authorities to minimize inconvenience and ensure safety on these alternate routes.
In order to execute the maintenance work efficiently and manage traffic effectively, the department has coordinated with key administrative authorities. Notifications regarding the flyover closure and the planned maintenance work have been shared with the Chief Engineer (PWD Roads), the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Guwahati, along with other officials responsible for monitoring traffic and public safety during the closure. This coordination ensures that all relevant authorities are aware of the schedule and can take necessary steps to manage traffic flow and respond to any emergency situations.
The PWRD highlighted that the bearing replacement operation is a critical preventive measure. Bearings are structural elements that support the flyover and allow it to handle the dynamic loads of vehicular traffic. Their proper functioning is essential to prevent structural damage and prolong the lifespan of the flyover. Preventive maintenance like this is crucial not only for safety but also to avoid more extensive repairs in the future that could lead to longer closures and greater disruption to the city’s traffic.
Additionally, the department assured the public that all necessary precautions will be taken during the maintenance period. The work will be conducted within the scheduled time frame to avoid extended traffic disruptions, and safety measures will be implemented to protect both workers and commuters. By taking these steps, the PWRD aims to maintain smooth urban mobility while ensuring that essential infrastructure remains safe and reliable for daily use.
In summary, the Chandmari Flyover will undergo critical maintenance including bearing replacement over three nights in October 2025, with closures from 10 PM to 6 AM. Alternate routes have been designated, and coordination among administrative and traffic authorities has been ensured. The PWRD emphasizes the importance of preventive maintenance for structural integrity, safety, and longevity, while assuring commuters that all precautions will be taken to minimize inconvenience. The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to maintaining vital infrastructure in Guwahati, balancing essential repairs with the need to keep the city’s traffic network functional.
