The Election Commission of India (ECI) has firmly dismissed recent allegations regarding irregularities in the electoral rolls of Sikkim, asserting that the claims are baseless and aimed at undermining the credibility of the electoral process.

In an official statement, the ECI reaffirmed that the electoral roll revision in Sikkim was carried out in full compliance with established guidelines and under the strict supervision of electoral officials. The commission emphasized that all due procedures — including public consultations, claims and objections, and thorough field verification — were meticulously followed during the roll preparation process.

“Sikkim has maintained a clean electoral record over the years, and the integrity of its voter rolls remains intact,” the commission noted. It also highlighted that multiple independent observers and election officers had validated the electoral rolls through rigorous checks and verifications during the summary revision exercise.

The commission further clarified that any concerns raised by political parties or individuals were duly examined and addressed during the official window provided for raising objections. “None of the objections presented any substantive evidence of wrongdoing or manipulation,” the ECI stated.

Responding to the timing of the allegations — just weeks ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Sikkim — the ECI suggested that the accusations appeared to be politically motivated. “Attempting to cast doubt on the electoral roll at such a crucial time only serves to mislead voters and erode public trust in democratic institutions,” it said.

The ECI encouraged citizens to use official channels to verify their voter information and report any discrepancies responsibly. It also reminded stakeholders that the Commission operates with full transparency and remains committed to upholding the sanctity of free and fair elections in the country.

With elections around the corner, the ECI has also intensified voter awareness campaigns in Sikkim and bolstered efforts to ensure inclusivity, especially for first-time voters, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

The reaffirmation by the ECI comes as a strong message against misinformation, reinforcing the commission’s commitment to maintaining electoral integrity across all states, including Sikkim.
