The Gauhati High Court was thrust into a tense situation on the morning of April 22 after receiving a bomb threat via email, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement authorities. According to police sources, the email claimed that a bomb had been planted in the high court building and warned of an imminent explosion. The alarming message sparked swift action from the authorities, who quickly mobilized a specialized team to secure the premises and initiate a comprehensive search operation.

A senior police officer, speaking to PTI, confirmed that officers were dispatched to the site as soon as the threat was reported. “We have immediately rushed a team to the high court after getting the threat message. Our experts are checking every corner of the premises, and nothing has been found so far. We believe it is a hoax,” the officer stated. However, he also added that the complete details would only emerge once the entire search and sanitization operation was concluded.

In response to the threat, security around the high court premises was heightened. Bomb disposal squads, along with sniffer dogs and advanced detection equipment, were deployed to meticulously inspect the building and surrounding areas. Despite the gravity of the situation, the functioning of the court remained largely unaffected.

A senior official from the high court provided further information regarding the email, stating that it originated from an unknown group identifying itself as the 'Madras Tigers'. The message reportedly included a specific threat to destroy the entire court building. “Police have come and they are carrying out a search operation. They have brought different equipment to sanitise the building,” the official said.

While the search continued throughout the day, the court's judicial work proceeded as scheduled. Judges continued to hear cases, and court staff maintained normal operations, albeit under heightened security. This decision to carry on with the court’s daily functioning was viewed as a demonstration of resilience and calm in the face of potential danger.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of public institutions and the increasing misuse of digital platforms for spreading fear. Law enforcement agencies are now focusing on tracing the origin of the email and identifying the individuals or group responsible for issuing the threat. Cyber experts have been roped in to assist in the investigation, with efforts underway to track the IP address and digital footprint associated with the threatening message.

The police have not ruled out the possibility of the email being part of a larger hoax or an attempt to disrupt judicial proceedings. However, they have assured that all necessary precautions are being taken and that the safety of the court, its officials, and the general public remains their top priority.

As of now, no explosive devices or suspicious materials have been found within the court premises. The investigation continues, and updates are expected once the forensic and cyber teams complete their analysis.
