President Murmu Postpones Assam Visit Following Jammu & Kashmir Terror Attack
President Droupadi Murmu has postponed her scheduled two-day visit to Assam in the wake of the tragic terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, officials confirmed on Tuesday, April 23.
Murmu was originally expected to arrive in Guwahati on the evening of April 24 and attend two key official engagements the following day. However, a communication from Rashtrapati Bhavan informed the Assam Governor's Secretariat of the postponement, citing the recent terror attack as the reason.
"We received a communication from Rashtrapati Bhavan informing us that the visit has been postponed due to the terror attack. It will be rescheduled at a later date," an official from the Governor’s Secretariat told PTI.
During her visit, President Murmu was scheduled to present the prestigious Srimanta Sankardeva Award to renowned classical dancer Sonal Mansingh at a state government event. She was also invited as the chief guest at the 32nd convocation ceremony of Gauhati University, set to be held on Friday afternoon.
Despite the President’s absence, the university has decided to proceed with the convocation as planned. "We received the communication that the President has postponed her visit. We will hold the convocation on the announced date and time without the President," a university official stated.
In a related development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Kanpur on April 24 has also been cancelled in light of the terror attack. Modi was slated to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for a series of development projects worth over ₹20,000 crore.
According to officials, the decision to cancel the Prime Minister’s visit was made out of respect for the somber national mood following the attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists. Among the victims was Shubham, a young man from Kanpur, whose death has deeply moved the local community.
“Terrorists struck at Baisaran meadows, a popular tourist destination near Pahalgam in south Kashmir, on Tuesday, killing 26 people,” an official source said. The assault has been widely condemned across the country, prompting the cancellation or rescheduling of public events and official functions.
The President’s and Prime Minister’s decisions underscore the gravity of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and reflect the government’s solidarity with the victims and their families during this period of mourning.
Further details regarding the rescheduling of President Murmu’s Assam visit are expected to be announced by Rashtrapati Bhavan in the coming days.
