Renowned Historian M.G.S. Narayanan Passes Away at 92

Muttayil Govinda Sankara Narayanan, widely known as M.G.S. Narayanan, a celebrated historian, researcher, and educator, passed away on Saturday at the age of 92. According to a report by Onmanorama, Narayanan breathed his last at 9:52 AM at his residence in Malaparamba, Kozhikode.

Born on August 20, 1932, in Ponnani, Kerala, Narayanan made significant contributions to the academic understanding of Kerala’s ancient history and culture. Through his extensive research and writings, he established a scholarly framework that continues to guide historians studying the region. His pioneering work earned him prestigious positions, including serving as the Member Secretary and later Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR).

A prolific writer, Narayanan authored around 200 books and articles over his lifetime. Notably, he published 112 research papers in prominent national and international journals, showcasing his deep engagement with historical scholarship. His intellectual contributions were not confined to writing alone; he was actively involved in several academic bodies. Narayanan collaborated with the South Indian History Congress, the Epigraphical Society of India, the Place Name Society of India, the Rock Art Society of India, and the Numismatic Society of South India, among others.

Beyond his research, Narayanan was also known for participating in numerous workshops and seminars, both within India and internationally, sharing his insights and fostering greater understanding of South Indian history. His scholarly rigor, dedication to historical accuracy, and passion for teaching made him a respected figure among students and fellow historians alike.

M.G.S. Narayanan’s passing marks the end of a remarkable era in the field of historical research, particularly in South Indian and Kerala studies. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of historians and scholars.
