The Nagaon police have identified Imdadul Islam, a resident of Burhagaon in Morigaon district, as the prime suspect in the attack on Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi's convoy, which occurred on the evening of Sunday, April 27, in Dhing. Islam, who was suspended from the Congress party just a day before the attack, is believed to have orchestrated the assault. According to Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka, the investigation suggests that Islam played a pivotal role in the attack, with several other individuals also implicated. Police teams are currently working in the Morigaon and Nagaon districts to track down and arrest the suspects.
The assailants, reportedly traveling from Lahorighat, launched the attack while Bordoloi was returning from a poll meeting in Zengoni. Bordoloi’s convoy was ambushed as it passed through Dumdumia New Market in Dhing. The assailants used small arms to carry out the attack, and Bordoloi has described it as a "planned attack." In his statement, Bordoloi accused BJP supporters of being behind the assault, drawing parallels to a similar attack on Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain during the by-polls.
The police have not yet revealed any specific details about the political motivations of the assailants, but they are investigating the possibility of personal or political disputes being involved. SP Deka declined to comment on any possible political links to the suspect, emphasizing that the focus remains solely on capturing the individuals responsible for the attack. Deka assured the public that efforts to arrest the remaining miscreants are ongoing, and the authorities are optimistic about making swift arrests.
The attack has sparked political controversy, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika suggesting that it may have stemmed from personal disputes over financial matters. In a social media post, Hazarika linked the attack to accusations from a Congress worker who claimed that Bordoloi had demanded money for a party ticket. Hazarika implied that the assault could have been a reaction to these allegations, adding that the attack had no connection to the BJP. He stressed that the region where the attack occurred is a Congress stronghold, and blamed attempts to link the BJP to the incident as "baseless and irresponsible." He urged against the political exploitation of the attack.
Despite Hazarika’s statements, Bordoloi, in his remarks, accused BJP supporters of orchestrating the assault, noting the timing and nature of the attack. Bordoloi expressed his belief that the attack was premeditated and part of a larger political scheme to target him and his party. The Congress MP also mentioned that this incident was reminiscent of similar attacks on political leaders in the past, particularly pointing to the by-poll incident involving Rakibul Hussain.
As the investigation progresses, the Nagaon police are intensifying their efforts to ensure that all individuals involved in the attack are apprehended. Authorities are keen on bringing the attackers to justice and preventing further incidents of political violence. The incident has raised concerns over political safety in the region, as well as the broader implications for security during the upcoming elections. The police have released sketches of the suspects and are asking for public assistance in locating them.
